Background

In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, managing and sharing knowledge within organisations is a significant challenge. This is particularly true where large volumes of data are produced, disseminated and reused. The creation and curation of multilingual reference data – through lists, taxonomies, thesauri and ontologies – is fundamental for effective knowledge management and sharing.

It is increasingly common for organisations, including individuals, companies, national public services, and EU and international bodies, to use IT and semantic solutions to perform such tasks. These efforts are complemented by the broader integration of advanced technologies, including natural language processing (NLP), machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI).

Despite these advancements, interoperability and information retrieval challenges remain, often due to fragmented data systems. With data volumes and complexity projected to grow at an accelerating pace, the use of semantic technologies and AI is becoming essential.

In this context, the Publications Office of the European Union and Interoperable Europe, supported by the Digital Europe Programme, play crucial roles. As central providers and reference points for semantic assets, these organisations facilitate the sharing of experience, knowledge and technology.

The Publications Office offers open access to specialised resources through platforms such as the EU Vocabularies website, while Interoperable Europe uses knowledge-sharing platforms such as GitHub and Joinup. The Digital Europe Programme supports the creation of digital solutions that enable public administrations, businesses and citizens across Europe to benefit from interoperable, cross-border, and cross-sector public services.
